Artist Statement

Alice M. Hughey is attracted to abstract patterns. Of particular interest are patterns that involve things one sees and uses regularly, but rarely examines closely. In the home, her subjects have included musical instruments and kitchen utensils. Among her favorite subjects in nature are things that are all around, but that we tend to walk by, such as sticks, stones, and plants that are considered weeds. Hughey's goal is to transcend the very ordinariness of these objects through abstract images. She often chooses to work in black and white to focus on shapes and patterns as well as to provide more freedom for the imagination of the viewer.
